NPHI Statement on the Inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris
WASHINGTON D.C. – The National Partnership for Healthcare and Hospice Innovation (NPHI) congratulates Joseph R. Biden Jr. and Kamala D. Harris on their inaugurations as the 46th President of the United States and the 49th Vice-President of the United States. This peaceful transition of power between Administrations is one of the hallmarks of our democracy and we are hopeful that our country will unify around our longstanding democratic traditions and values. NPHI looks forward to working with President Biden’s Administration on a range of issues to support high-quality advanced illness and end-of-life care.
“NPHI is confident that President Biden’s Administration is well-positioned to guide the country toward recovery through his leadership and sound policy. The backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, racial inequality, and a strained economy reinforces the need for policymakers to come together to find solutions to unify our nation in health care and well beyond. We must also recognize the pandemic has created an immense amount of grief and loss. This Administration certainly recognizes the immense impact it can have on an individual, their family, and community. NPHI and our mission-driven, community-based not-for-profit hospice and palliative care members stand ready to work with policymakers across the political spectrum,” said NPHI CEO Tom Koutsoumpas.
As mission-driven hospice and palliative care providers, NPHI members serve the needs of tens of thousands of patients and families each day when facing serious, advanced illness, death, and grief. The COVID-19 global pandemic has fundamentally altered the way individuals, families, and communities can process and observe traditions to respect the passing of a loved one. The core philosophy of hospice has always been to meet not just the physical needs of patients, but also their behavioral, psychosocial, and spiritual needs as well as their loved ones. With the COVID-19 pandemic worsening across the country, these core tenets of our mission-driven work will be critical to our recovery as a nation.
NPHI has always emphasized the need for bipartisan cooperation and we will continue to do so as President Biden’s Administration and the 117th Congress take on the growing challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as broader health care reforms. We are and will continue to be at the forefront of these issues for community-based, not-for-profit hospice and palliative care providers as well as the patients and families you care for every day.
