NPHI Hosts Discussion Focused on Decreasing Employee Burnout and Strengthening Resiliency (1.14.21)

Today, the National Partnership for Healthcare and Hospice Innovation (NPHI) hosted Rachel Derry and Patricia McDaniel of Northstar Care Community (NSCC) to lead a discussion on decreasing employee burnout and strengthening resiliency amongst frontline providers. NPHI Strategic Advisor Mike Milward moderated the discussion. The meeting aimed to provide member programs and, specifically front-line providers, with the skills and information to help mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental, emotional, and spiritual health. Rachel and Patricia provided members with strategies to handle occupational distress and offered different approaches to managing workplace exhaustion, among other topics.

“NPHI members serve, even in the best of times, the most vulnerable patients in the healthcare system. They bend over backwards to provide these patients and their families with high-quality, patient-centered hospice and palliative care. Unfortunately, as the Coronavirus pandemic continues to rage across the country, front-line providers have been forced to shoulder extra burdens in addition to the challenges of their everyday work.” Said Tom Koutsoumpas, CEO of NPHI. “It is more important than ever that these heroes are celebrated and supported with the mental health services and resiliency training they need to continue to serve patients – NPHI remains dedicated to listening, learning, and providing that support wherever and whenever possible.”

The conversation, entitled “NPHI Member Engagement Call: Decreasing Employee Burnout and Strengthening Resiliency”, was part of a biweekly series of NPHI-hosted discussions to address today’s pressing hospice topics through engagement with health policy experts, thought leaders, and other industry innovators.

The discussion was meant to present and educate NPHI’s membership on the types of interventions – personal, organizational, and team – that can assist providers in dealing with burnout. For instance, NSCC developed approximately 15 interventions including, leadership training guides, a dedicated clinical technology specialist, and a set of meditations for their staff, all created to improve employee resiliency.
