Nonprofit Hospices Shine in Study on Caregiver and Employee Experiences of Largest US Hospices

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Partnership for Healthcare and Hospice Innovation (NPHI) is pleased to amplify new research findings that reinforce the significant impact nonprofit hospices have on the overall experience of caregivers and employees. The study, Caregiver and Employee Experience Among Big Hospices: Ranking the Largest U.S. Hospices by Three Quality Indicators, reveals that caregivers and employees of nonprofit hospices consistently report higher levels of satisfaction compared to those at for-profit providers.

This comprehensive analysis of the largest U.S. hospices highlights the strong performance of nonprofit organizations, many of which are NPHI members, in prioritizing compassionate, patient-centered care. In fact, of the 50 largest hospices ranked by quality, a significant number are NPHI members—including the majority of the top 15—solidifying the nonprofit reputation for delivering exceptional care.

“Our members are at the forefront of compassionate, patient-centered care, and this report is a clear testament to that,” said Tom Koutsoumpas, CEO of NPHI. “When you look at the rankings, it’s no surprise that many of the highest-performing hospices are nonprofit, with the majority of the top 15 being our members. This speaks volumes about the commitment of nonprofit providers to deliver the kind of care patients and families deserve.”

Key findings from the report include:

  • Higher Caregiver Satisfaction: Nonprofit hospices ranked higher in caregiver satisfaction metrics, indicating a strong emphasis on patient and family-centered care.
  • Staffing Stability: Nonprofit providers were associated with fewer staffing shortages compared to their for-profit counterparts, ensuring consistent and quality care delivery.
  • Positive Sentiment: Caregivers expressed more positive sentiment toward nonprofit hospices, highlighting the compassionate care they received.

This study underscores the ongoing value of nonprofit hospices in providing exceptional care that addresses both the emotional and physical needs of patients and their families. It also reinforces the collective leadership of NPHI members in advocating for the highest standards of care.
