WASHINGTON, October 5, 2023 – The National Partnership for Healthcare and Hospice Innovation (NPHI), the national voice for not-for-profit advanced illness, hospice, and palliative care providers, convened a gathering of its 100+ member CEOs in the heart of Washington, D.C. to discuss the most pressing challenges facing member programs. This gathering of advanced illness providers serving communities across the country provides an opportunity for sharing best practices, learning from subject matter experts, and charting the future course for not-for-profit advanced illness providers as they deliver high-quality care to patients and their families across the country.
During the week’s events, CEOs from NPHI member programs had the unique opportunity to engage with an array of special guests, government officials, and other members. Among the distinguished speakers who joined this year’s event were Senators John Barrasso and Mark Warner, who each delivered welcome remarks highlighting the Congressional focus on supporting end-of-life care providers. Both emphasized the tremendous value of the work NPHI members do in ensuring people experience a compassionate and comfortable end-of-life experience aligned with their unique wishes.
Dara Corrigan, Director of the Center for Program Integrity at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), also joined to discuss the ongoing fraud, waste, and abuse challenges impacting the hospice community and the work that CMS is doing to address program integrity oversight concerns from well-meaning providers. She committed to continuing proactive engagement with non-profit leaders to address vulnerabilities in the Medicare hospice benefit and strengthen oversight of poor-performing providers.
“It was phenomenal to engage in-person with our member CEOs last week, representing a diverse range of hospice, palliative care, and advanced illness organizations from across the nation,” stated Tom Koutsoumpas, NPHI CEO. “Gathering together in Washington, D.C., and hearing from an incredible array of speakers, highlights our collective commitment to advocating for exemplary quality care for patients and their families, as well as robust support for those who provide it. We were pleased to be able to cover a multitude of pressing issues, including the challenges presented by healthcare workforce shortages, innovative concepts for promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and a sense of belonging within our member organizations, and the steps being taken by NPHI to address program integrity concerns.”
CEOs representing NPHI member organizations traveled from every corner of the United States to participate in this pivotal event. Their presence in the nation’s capital also presented a unique opportunity to engage with their respective Congressional delegations. Member CEOs canvassed Capitol Hill sharing NPHI’s latest report, entitled People Over Profits: A Values-Based Movement for Declining Health, which tells the story of the rapidly evolving end-of-life care marketplace and the role of community-based not-for-profit providers in rebuilding trust and delivering superior care.
As leaders in the field of advanced illness, hospice, and palliative care, NPHI, and its member CEOs remain steadfast in their dedication to improving the quality of care provided to patients and their families, advocating for meaningful policy changes, and fostering a sense of unity in addressing the pressing challenges facing the healthcare industry.
