NPHI Hosts Discussion Focused on Understanding Vaccine Hesitancy Among Minority Groups
Today, the National Partnership for Healthcare and Hospice Innovation (NPHI) hosted Reverend Dr. Tyrone Pitts, an internationally published author on issues of racism and the Emeritus General Secretary for the Progressive National Baptist Convention. Rev. Dr. Pitts provided his wealth of expertise and knowledge to offer members a historical overview into the context of why many in underserved and disadvantaged communities are hesitant to receive vaccines. This session also provided members with an opportunity to discuss other top of mind issues as they relate to race, class, and cultures differences when treating patients with advanced illnesses.
“We simply could not be more honored to welcome Rev. Dr. Pitts to address our members on the intricacies of vaccine hesitancy in disadvantaged communities and the steps we can all take to combat those legitimate concerns,” said Tom Koutsoumpas, CEO of NPHI. “Nothing is more central to the mission of NPHI than ensuring each patient and their family receives the highest quality of care no matter their background or innate characteristics. It is incumbent upon all of us to listen closely, understand these concerns, and enact meaningful changes that support our diverse communities.”
The conversation, entitled “NPHI Member Engagement Call: Providing Leadership in a Moment of Crisis: Responding to Issues of Race, Class and Culture Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.”, was part of a biweekly series of NPHI-hosted discussions to address today’s pressing hospice topics through engagement with health policy experts, thought leaders, and other industry innovators.
The discussion was meant to present and educate NPHI’s membership on how to understand systemic inequities in healthcare and how they’re experienced by those in minority communities. Rev. Dr. Pitts discussed how the COVID-19 pandemic further highlighted these inequities which can be clearly seen in rates of vaccination access and uptake. Additionally, he asked those in attendance to consider what is meant by “ethical leadership” and offered suggestions on how leaders can adopt this mindset within their organizations.
